FAMILY FUNCTIONING AND ADHERENCE TO HEMODIALYSIS TREATMENT AMONG PATIENTS AT THE REGIONAL HOSPITAL OF VILLARRICA, GUAIRÁ, PARAGUAY, 2025

Chronic kidney disease is a major public health problem due to the increasing number of patients requiring renal replacement therapy and the complications associated with hemodialysis. This study examined the relationship between family functioning and adherence to hemodialysis treatment among patients at the Regional Hospital of Villarrica, Guairá, Paraguay, in 2025. An observational, analytical, correlational, cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach was conducted in 30 patients undergoing hemodialysis, selected through census sampling. Data were collected using the FF-SIL Family Functioning Test and a therapeutic adherence questionnaire after obtaining written and verbal informed consent. Data were analyzed using Microsoft Excel 2021 and IBM SPSS Statistics version 25, applying descriptive statistics and Spearman's correlation coefficient. Most participants (86.7%) presented moderately functional family functioning, while 13.3% showed dysfunctional family functioning. High adherence to hemodialysis treatment predominated (86.7%), followed by acceptable adherence (13.3%), with no cases of low adherence. No statistically significant relationship was found between family functioning and adherence to hemodialysis treatment (ρ = −0.081; p = 0.671). These findings suggest that adherence to hemodialysis treatment was not directly associated with family functioning in the study population.
